Remember the following points:
- Things you must remove: filler words, false starts, unintentional repetitions, stutters, meaningless sounds, etc. (See the Transcription and Subtitles Guidelines for more info).
- Things you may abbreviate: mathematical terms, units and measurements so long as these are not clearly spelled out or do not appear in their full form on screen. Naturally, mentioned abbreviations (e.g. somebody says “ASAP”) must be written in that form as well.
- Things you may correct: questionable grammar or spelling mistakes that could either be pronounced correctly or not. In that case, always give the benefit of the doubt.
- Things you must not remove: anything else.
- Things you must not abbreviate: speaker’s names, full-length forms that have an abbreviation (e.g. somebody says “As soon as possible” and you wish to write ASAP).
- You must not paraphrase anything in same-language captioning!
However, apart from these instances, we caption what the speaker says as closely as possible. We do not abbreviate things for the sake of CPS. We also do not correct grammar mistakes. The only things you can abbreviate
