The test translation of subtitles is for a Finnish scripted TV series. The subtitles will be high visibility so accuracy is a must and subtitles should be TV-READY.

Subtitle formatting

All subtitles should be max. 2 lines and should appear along with the audio they cover. Subtitles should not exceed 42 CPL on either line, but anything up to 50 is tolerable if necessary because of punctuation issues.

Line breaks are very important and should be made at logical points in the translation.

Tags: There should be no inaudible or cross talking tags present in the subtitles. Please only include subtitles for text that is plot-pertinent. Any background chatter or cross-talking does not need to be included.

Speaker labelling

How to label

Label speakers as they are referred to by other characters or by information you can find online about the show.

If people’s names cannot be identified within the dialogue or online, you can label them by their most relevant attribute:

• SECURITY GUARD, DRIVER, KID
  • If multiple people appear with the same attribute, separate them by numbers (e.g. SECURITY GUARD 1, SECURITY GUARD 2…)
• MAN 1, MAN 2, WOMAN 1, WOMAN 2
• If you can’t even see the person (and you have no idea if you’ve labeled this person before), you can write UNKNOWN. No number needed.
