When identifying various speakers in a subtitled video, please refer to the following principles for labelling.
Please note that the usage rules are not the same as for SDH speaker labelling.
When to label speakers Every time there’s a change in speech, identify the speaker. Even if they’re directly visible.
Formatting Use round brackets () on the same line as the captioned speech.
Capitalisation Capitalise the first letter, as well as names and proper nouns.
Identification As a default, try to identify speakers by their name.
If you know their names, you can identify speakers straight away and do not need to wait until their name has been made public in the video.
If you are unable to find the name, describe the person by their most relevant attribute.
e.g. (Company CEO), (Employee), (Teacher), (Student), (Meeting host), (Meeting member)
<aside> 🫂 Use inclusive language: never use race, ethnicity, sexuality or religion as an identifier.
</aside>
If you truly cannot find any relevant attribute, you can default to (Speaker 1), (Speaker 2), etc.
If a speaker receives intended namings by other people, you can label them that way.
Whatever identifier you use (name/attribute/speaker), the person needs to have the exact same identification throughout the entire video.
Numerisation If multiple people in the video possess the same attribute, number them, making sure every time the attribute is the same. Number the people according to whose speech appears first in the video.
If people are already referred to in the video by a number (e.g. someone says “Patient 5”) use that label with that number
Combining speakers If two speakers appear in the same capsule, use a hyphen (-) directly followed by the label. Only introduce the first speaker if they were not speaking before.
e.g.: (if there are two changes of speaker)
| 001 | -(Professor) In the next example… -(Student 4) Sorry! I have a question. | | --- | --- |
e.g.: (if only the second speaker is a speaker change)
| 001 | -In the next example… -(Student 4) Sorry! I have a question. | | --- | --- |
